Paul Sculthorpe MBE (born September 22, 1977 ) is a retired English rugby league player . During his career he won the Super League four times, the Challenge Cup three times and the World Club Challenge twice with St Helens . His brother Danny Sculthorpe is also a rugby league player.

Career

Sculthorpe grew up in Oldham , where he attended Counthill School . At the age of 20 he began playing professional rugby with the Warrington Wolves . Shortly afterwards he made his debut for the English national team.

In 1996 he was elected to the Super League Dream Team and took part in a tour from Great Britain through Oceania .

In 1997 he moved from Warrington to St Helens for £ 300,000 and took part with Great Britain in a three-game friendly series against Australia .

In 1999 he won the Super League Grand Final against the Bradford Bulls with St Helens and took part in the World Club Challenge 2000, which they lost to the Melbourne Storm . In 2000, St Helens again won the Super League Grand Final, this time against the Wigan Warriors . In the World Club Challenge 2001 St Helens won against the Brisbane Broncos , where he put a try and kicked a drop goal.

In 2001 he was named Man of the Match in a friendly between Great Britain and Australia and won the Man of Steel Award . In 2002 he was elected to the Super League Dream Team, won the Man of Steel Award again and won the Super League Grand Final with St Helens against the Bradford Bulls. However, they lost the World Club Challenge 2003 against the Sydney Roosters . In 2004 he was re-elected to the Super League Dream Team, won the Challenge Cup with St Helens against the Wigan Warriors and took part with Great Britain in the Tri-Nations 2004, where they made it to the final, in which they were defeated by Australia. In 2005 he scored his 1000th point for St Helens.

In 2006 he won the Challenge Cup against the Huddersfield Giants as the captain of St Helens . In 2007 he published his autobiography Man of Steel and was named Man of the Match at the 2007 World Club Challenge, where St Helens beat the Brisbane Broncos.

After playing only a handful of games in 2008 due to injuries and having to be substituted in the first few minutes of the 2008 Challenge Cup final against Hull FC due to injury, St Helens said they would part ways with him at the end of the season. Among other things, he had the opportunity to switch to the Salford Red Devils or to play with his brother Danny at the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats . On September 19, 2008, he announced the end of his career.

In 2013 he became a member of the Order of the British Empire for his "merits to rugby league and charity".
