Johann Friedrich Leopold Duncker (* 1768 or 1770; † August 21, 1842 in Berlin ) was a Prussian civil servant, writer and poet.

Life

Duncker was first a councilor of war , then the first lecturing cabinet secretary of the King of Prussia and a privy councilor in the cabinet of Friedrich Wilhelm III. The death of Queen Luise he wrote with the composer Ludwig Hellwig the song Louise is no longer that in the so-called "Night celebration" on August 18, 1810 concert hall of the Opera House presented and at the expense of the authors in favor of Luise Foundation issued (Grobenschütz, Berlin 1810). As a secret cabinet secretary, he accompanied the Prussian king to the Congress of Vienna in September 1814 . In Vienna he lived with the Giannatasio del Rio family, where he made the acquaintance of Ludwig van Beethoven , whose music he admired, and whom he asked to compose music for his drama Leonore Prohaska . Beethoven fulfilled the request in the spring of 1815 with his music for the drama Leonore Prohaska WoO 96 for soprano, male choir and orchestra. Both the drama and Beethoven's music were not performed during the two authors' lifetime.

In addition, Duncker became known as the author of the Prussian national anthem ( Borussia ), which was set to music by Spontini . He is also the author of the text for the song Die Urstätte ("Who does not call so much his own", music by Carl Friedrich Rungenhagen ).

He last lived at Mauerstrasse 36, where he also died.

Awards

Duncker was a knight of the Red Eagle Order II. Class, the Iron Cross and commander of the Swedish Vasa Order .
