Paul Wellens (born February 27, 1980 ) is a former English rugby league player. He played for St Helens in the Super League , with them he won the Super League and the Challenge Cup five times and the World Club Challenge twice . Wellens is one of the few players to have won the Lance Todd Trophy , Harry Sunderland Trophy, and Man of Steel Award . He was elected to the Super League Dream Team four times during his career .

Career

Wellens made his Super League debut for St Helens in 1999. He quickly became an integral part of the squad due to his performance and played for the national teams of England and Great Britain. At the end of the season he won the Super League Grand Final with St Helens against the Bradford Bulls 8-6.

By winning the title in the Super League he took part with St Helens in the World Club Challenge 2000 against the NRL champion Melbourne Storm , Melbourne won the game clearly with 44: 6. He won the Super League Grand Final again with St Helens, this time 29:16 against the Wigan Warriors and took part with them for the second time in a row in the World Club Challenge, which they won this time 20:18 against the Brisbane Broncos .

In 2002 he again won the Super League Grand Final against the Bradford Bulls with St Helens. In 2004 he won the Player of the Season Award, an award within the team, and took part in the Tri Nations with Great Britain.

In 2006 he won the Super League, the Challenge Cup and a year later the World Club Challenge with St Helens, was voted "Player of the year" by the Rugby League Writers' Association and the players of the Super League and won the Man of Steel Award . As Man of the Match in the Super League Grand Final against Hull FC , he also won the Harry Sunderland Trophy .

In 2008 Wellens took part in the Rugby League World Cup with England . His debut was in the group stage against Papua New Guinea.

In 2014 he scored his 1000th point for St Helens and took part with them for the tenth time in the Super League Grand Final, in which they beat the Wigan Warriors 14: 6.

Failing to recover from a hip joint injury, he announced his retirement on June 24, 2015.
