Jason Thorpe Robinson OBE (born July 30, 1974 in Leeds ) is a former English rugby union and rugby league player . He played in the outer three-quarters and goalkeeper positions . He was best known for his enormous speed and agility, through which he was able to achieve 28 attempts in 51 games for the English national rugby union team . His greatest achievement was winning the title at the 2003 World Cup .

Player career

Rugby league

Robinson began his career in 1991 in the variant rugby league with the Hunslet Hawks , a club from his hometown of Leeds. Just a year later he was lured away by one of the best teams in the British Rugby League Premiership, the Wigan Warriors . After rugby union became a professional sport in 1996 and the rugby league season was moved from winter to summer, Robinson switched sides. He played for Bath for one half of the year and for Wigan the other half . In 2000 he finally decided to switch entirely to the 15 variant of rugby and signed a contract with the Sale Sharks .

Rugby union

Robinson made his debut for the Sharks in November 2000. In February 2001 he was also considered for the English national team when they met Italy . At the time, he was only the second player, after Barrie-Jon Mather , to play both variants for England. In the same year he was also allowed to participate in the tour of the British and Irish Lions and scored in the team's only win against Australia .

Robinson was consequently also nominated for the England squad for the 2003 World Cup . In the preliminary round he managed one attempt against Georgia , and even two in the final game against Uruguay . In the final, he scored the only attempt of his team, which in the end won 20:17 in extra time against the Wallabies and thus became world champions for the first time. In the course of the tournament he had participated in all games and was an important pillar of England's success.

Following the world title, Captain Martin Johnson announced the end of his career and named Jonny Wilkinson as his successor. However, Wilkinson was out for months due to several injuries, so a new captain was sought. Because of his experience and his important role within the team, Jason Robinson was appointed as the new team captain. He scored a hat-trick in his first game as captain when the English beat Canada 70-0. At the Six Nations 2004 he made three attempts against Italy again, he was also named player of the day. The six-nation tournament was not successful for England in the following year, so that Robinson's captaincy was also up for debate. Martin Corry was his successor .

Robinson was also part of the Lion tour in 2005. However, since his wife was expecting their fourth child, he missed much of the preparation. However, he joined the squad in time and was able to take part in the first game against New Zealand . On September 24th of that year Robinson announced his preliminary retirement with the national team. He wanted to spend more time with his now growing family.

Robinson returned to England's squad at the 2007 Six Nations after national coach Brian Ashton asked him to. In his first game for England in a year and a half, he immediately made two attempts against Scotland . A week later against Italy, he scored another. After the Six Nations, he announced the end of his career after the 2006/07 season. However, he made himself available for the international matches in the summer and the World Cup . On April 13 of that year he played his last club game for the Sale Sharks against Bath. Appropriate for the occasion, he made the decisive attempt a few seconds before the end of the game. His teammates then asked him to also perform the raising kick, which Robinson placed extremely close to the stakes.

At the World Cup in France, Robinson injured himself in the first game of the preliminary round, which England lost 0:36 against the Springboks . However, he returned to the quarter-final game against Australia and was able to land a surprise success with his team. In the semifinals against the hosts, he played his 50th international match and was allowed to play as captain of the team again. England was able to win this game surprisingly and met South Africa again in the final. Robinson was injured in that game in the 46th minute and had to be substituted. England lost the game 6:15 and could not defend their title.

His last game as an active Robinson played on December 1, 2007 as part of the Barbarians at Twickenham Stadium . When he was replaced in the 68th minute, he was adopted with great applause.

Coaching career

In March 2008, Robinson announced that he would be a coach with the English Rugby League Association. There he led children's teams. In the coming season he will take over the coaching position at his former club Sale Sharks.

Private life

His nickname Billy Whiz is based on a character from the British comic The Beano . Robinson grew up in a deprived neighborhood of Leeds in the middle of a broken family where violence was common. He's been a dry alcoholic and revivalist since he started rugby .

After the 2003 World Cup, he published an autobiography called Finding My Feet: My Autobiography , in which he writes about coping with his troubled childhood and how much rugby helped him cope with his drinking problem.

On New Year's Day 2008 he was appointed OBE .
