The Uruguayan national rugby union team represents Uruguay in the sport of rugby union . She qualified for the World Championships in 1999 and 2003 and was able to win there each in the preliminary round. Their nickname "Los Teros" comes from the bronze lapwing , a bird native to South America.

history

1950s - 1980s

On September 9, 1951, the national team had to admit defeat 0:62 on their debut against Argentina . A few days later, however, Uruguay managed to celebrate their first victory in the association's history against Chile 8-3. Another success against Brazil achieved second place in the first edition of the South American rugby championship.

In 1953 Uruguay met Brazil again, for the first home game of the "Teros" in their history. In 1958 they played against Chile, Argentina and Peru again for the South American Championship, came with one win and two losses and ended up third. A year later, the "Junior Springboks", a selection of youngsters from the South African national team , were guests in Montevideo . In 1960, Uruguay received a selection from France for the first time in front of 5,000 spectators , but they were not counted as the official national team. The game was lost with 0:59.

In the following decades, Uruguay played every two years against other South American representatives for the continental championship and was able to win the title for the first time in 1981 because Argentina did not take part in this edition. In 1982 five Uruguayans were nominated for the first tour of the South American selection "Los Jaguares". The team traveled to South Africa to play a series of games against the Springboks. The most prominent representatives of the squad were the Argentines Hugo Porta and Marcel Loffreda .

1990s - today

In 1993 Uruguay had Argentina on the verge of defeat for the first time in qualifying for the 1995 World Cup . The team led 10: 6 for a long time until one of their players was sent off. The Argentines managed to turn the game around and win with 19:10, but the "Teros" were still greeted with great applause. They then defeated a reserve team of "Springboks" in Uruguay's first away game outside of the American continent and also won their game against the Welsh club Swansea in Montevideo.

In 1998 the team started qualifying for the World Cup in Wales . First you met Chile and Paraguay, both games could be made victorious. In the next round there were defeats against Argentina, Canada and the USA . You qualified for the barrage round, in which you could eliminate Morocco and thus take part in a World Cup for the first time. In the preliminary round, after two defeats against South Africa and Scotland and a victory over Spain , they were eliminated in third place.

In 2001 the ex-national players Diego Ormaechea and Marcelo Nicola took over the technical management of the national team and led them to the 2003 World Cup in Australia with one win and one loss each against Chile, Canada and the USA . In the preliminary round group C there were three major defeats and a 24:12 win against Georgia .

In 2005 Uruguay reached 14th place, the highest place in its history in the world rankings . In qualifying for the 2007 World Cup , the national team failed in the barrage round to Portugal . In Lisbon the first leg was lost 5:12, the 18:12 victory in Montevideo was just not enough for a successful qualification.
