The Niue national rugby union team represents the South Pacific island nation of Niue in rugby union . The team is classified as a third category national team by the International Rugby Board (IRB).

history

Niue played his first international game on September 11, 1983. After the disastrous 4: 124 defeat against the selection of Fiji , it was not until 2001 before a national Niues team took up again on the international stage. The first victory came on June 29, 2002 with 52: 5 against Vanuatu .

In Oceania, the team forms the second guard behind the teams from Fiji, Samoa and Tonga , which belong to the expanded world elite, together with the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea .

Internationally, the team was already good for surprises. Two victories against the much more highly rated Japan in early 2003 caused a sensation .

In August 2008, the team from Niue was able to win the Oceania Cup after victories over the Cook Islands in the preliminary round and New Caledonia in the final. The three top teams from Fiji, Samoa and Tonga do not take part in this competition.

In the qualifications for the Rugby Union World Cup 2003 , 2007 and 2011 you failed in the first round at the Cook Islands. The last time there was a 7:29 loss on June 27, 2009.

For the qualifying tournament for the Rugby Union World Cup 2015 , which took place as part of the Oceania Cup in July 2013 in Papua New Guinea , the team surprisingly did not register.
