The Sri Lankan national rugby union team represents Sri Lanka in the sport of rugby union . It belongs to the third class of strength ( third tier ). So far, the team has not yet qualified for a world championship.
history
On January 13, 1970, the Sri Lankan national team played the first official game in its history against Thailand , which ended at 18:18.
In the qualification for the Rugby Union World Cup 1995 , the team lost all three games against Japan with 3:67, Malaysia with 18:23 and Taiwan with 9:25 and was eliminated as a result.
The team finished the first round of qualifying for the 1999 Rugby Union World Cup first, after victories against Thailand with 30:15 and against Singapore with 18:15. In the second round Malaysia was first defeated with 37:15. After the 27:31 defeat against Taiwan and second place, the qualification was over.
In the first qualifying round for the Rugby Union World Cup 2003 , the team had to compete with China and Kazakhstan , with the second game against the Kazakhs lost at 14:20. Thus, the previous 9: 7 win against China could not help the team and the Sri Lankan selection was eliminated.
The team signed up to qualify for the 2007 Rugby Union World Cup . After two wins against Thailand with 48:38 and against Singapore with 34:17, the team was group first. In the decisive comparison against the other group winners Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka came to a 24:12 win and a 19:25 defeat and went on to the next round, although after the win against China with 30-0 and the 14:45 defeat against Hong Kong's qualification was over.
Sri Lanka took part in the first division of the 2008 Asian Five Nations . The team finished third after a draw with Singapore 20:20 and a loss to Taiwan 23:35.
With third place, the selection of Sri Lanka qualified for the first division of the Asian Five Nations 2009 , with the team again in third place after the semi-final defeat against Taiwan with 24:36 and the 51:17 win in the game for third place against Thailand occupied.
