The National Rugby Union Team of Papua New Guinea represents Papua New Guinea in rugby union . The team is classified as a third category national team by the International Rugby Board (IRB).

history

Papua New Guinea has played internationally in rugby union since 1966. The first international match in December was won against Vanuatu's selection 47: 3. In addition, they played test games against Wallis and Futuna and Fiji until 1969 . Until they participated in the qualification for the Rugby Union World Cup in 1999 , they only played sporadically internationally, including defeating Fiji in 1979 with 0:86.

In qualifying for the tournament in Wales , the team failed in the first round, although they could defeat Tahiti . The defeat against the Cook Islands cost the team the advancement.

In qualifying for the 2003 World Cup , things went much better. After victories over the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, they reached the third round, in which the Cook Islands were waiting. After a 29:14 home win, they lost a week later in the Cook Islands with 21:16. Due to the more points scored, Papua New Guinea reached the fourth and final round. There they lost to the team from Tonga in two games with 14:47 and 12:84.

In 2007 they defeated the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu again in the first round. In the next round, the Cook Islands succeeded in revenging their defeat four years ago, and Papua New Guinea were eliminated after a 12:37 defeat and a 20:11 victory. In qualifying for the 2011 World Cup, Papua New Guinea managed to advance to the decisive round in Oceania, where they were clearly defeated by Samoa twice and thus eliminated.
