Rangi Chase (born April 11, 1986 in Dannevirke , New Zealand ) is an English rugby league player of New Zealand descent. He plays in the Super League for the Salford Red Devils .

Career

Chase began his career in 2002 with the Manawatu Mustangs in the North Island Super 6 Competition. In 2006 he made his NRL debut for the Wests Tigers , from which he moved to the St. George Illawarra Dragons at the end of the season , with whom he stayed for two seasons.

In 2008 he was accepted into the "training squad" of the New Zealand Rugby League national team for the Rugby League World Cup in 2008 , but he ultimately only played one game for the New Zealand Māori .

In 2009 Chase moved to the Super League for the Castleford Tigers . He put 10 tries and scored more tackles than any other Super League player, which earned him the Tigers' player of the year award.

On August 21, 2009, it was announced that Chase had signed a four-year contract with the Tigers. In 2010 he played again for the New Zealand Māori.

In 2011 he received the Albert Goldthorpe Medal and the Man of Steel Award . He played a game for the Exiles , a selection team of Super League players from Australia and New Zealand, which plays in the irregular "International Origin Game" against England . Despite participating in the game he was Man of the Match in for the Exiles, he declared his intention to play for England. He was accepted into the English national team and received criticism from former player legend Garry Schofield . However, Chase had personally asked for the recording and stated publicly that he felt more at home in Castleford than in New Zealand .

His debut for England was in a 2011 Four Nations warm-up game against France in which he was the Man of the Match . His next games were against Wales and New Zealand . In the game against New Zealand he played against his former classmate Benji Marshall and his cousin Isaac Luke , which led to a correspondingly heated atmosphere. He also took part in the final, in which England lost 8:30 to Australia .

In 2012 he played with England against the Exiles. This was the first time a player had played for both the Exiles and England. He also played a friendly against France on November 11th.

In 2013 he participated with England in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. He first took part in a warm-up match against Italy , which England surprisingly lost at 14:15. In the further course of the tournament he took part in the group matches against Australia, Ireland and Fiji and in the quarter-finals against France, in which he put a try.

On February 11, 2013, he was suspended for two games after injuring Zak Hardaker from a high tackle in a game against the Leeds Rhinos .

He joined the Salford Red Devils in September 2013 for £ 115,000 . He signed a four-year contract. His debut for the Devils came in an 18-14 win over the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats . In the game he was injured, however, so that he had to be replaced after just 17 minutes.
