New Zealand Māori is a rugby league team that competes on an international level and consists entirely of New Zealand natives . In 2000 the team took part in the Rugby League World Cup as Aotearoa Māori .

history

As early as 1908, a Māori selection played an international rugby league match against Australia . The team has been taking part in the Pacific Cup since 1974 and is its record winner with four titles. In 2000, the team was approved for participation in the World Cup , which sparked controversy as the New Zealand Māori are not a national team in the strict sense. After an opening win against Scotland , however, the team lost its other games and was eliminated in the preliminary round.
