The Irish national rugby league team represents Ireland internationally in the sport of rugby league . Just like the Irish national rugby union team , the team represents both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland . The team is also known by the nickname "The Wolfhounds".

history

Because of the low popularity of the rugby league in Ireland , especially compared to rugby union , the island did not have its own national team for a long time. Occasionally Irish players competed for the British national rugby league team . It was not until March 17, 1995, that Ireland completed its first international match against the United States' national rugby league team in Washington, DC , which was won 24:22. For the 1995 World Cup were Wolfhounds not invited. At their World Cup premiere five years later, Ireland surprised as co-hosts with three wins in the preliminary round and a place in the quarter-finals, which they lost at 16:26 against the highly-favored Englishmen .

At the Rugby League World Cup in 2008 , the Irish once again won first place in their preliminary group, but failed to qualify for the semi-finals at Fiji . In 2013 they had no chance in a preliminary group with Australia , England and Fiji and lost all three games. The team’s greatest successes to date are two vice championships in the Rugby League European Cup .
