The English national rugby league team represents England on an international level in the sport of rugby league . For a long time, the team appeared rather sporadically, as the Rugby Football League was mostly represented by the national team of Great Britain in the most important international competitions . In 1995, however, the RFL switched to having the parts of the United Kingdom (England, Wales and Scotland ) regularly compete with their own national teams. Since then England has participated in all Rugby League World Cups.

history

In 1904 the English national team, which had formed as a result of the separation of the Rugby Football League from the Rugby Football Union , played its first international match in Wigan against a selection of Welsh and Scottish professionals, which they won 9-3. For a long time, however, the team was overshadowed by the British national rugby league team , which was the representative of the RFL in the most important international games. With the introduction of the Rugby League World Cup in 1954, this tendency intensified, so that the English team only played one international match between 1956 and 1968.

In 1975 England competed for the first time in a rugby league world championship, as the Welsh had their own team and a joint British appearance was not possible. The RFL team made it to the final in Leeds , but defeated Australia there by 0:25. In 1995 , after a break of two decades, English participation in a world championship came back, which from then on should become the rule. Again they made it to the final, but again Australia proved to be too strong an opponent. In front of over 66,000 spectators at London's Wembley Stadium, the Kangaroos won 16: 8.

In the other World Cup participations in 2000 , 2008 and 2013 England failed in the semifinals to New Zealand . England has been taking part in the Four Nations tournament since 2009 , but two second places have been the greatest success so far. At the 2017 World Cup , England made it back into the final for the first time since 1995 and lost 6-0 to the top favorites and hosts Australia in a hard-fought match. The English national rugby league team is still waiting in vain for an international title.
