Albert Goldthorpe Medal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Albert Goldthorpe Medal has been awarded annually since 2008, introduced by the Rugby Leaguer & League Express and awarded to the best player or players in the Super League . It is named after Albert Goldthorpe , one of the first famous English rugby league players at the beginning of the 20th century.

In contrast to the Man of Steel Award , in which members of the Rugby Football League and Super League players decide who receives the award, the Albert Goldthorpe Medal works on a similar principle to the Australian Dally M Medal . After each Super League game, League Express reporters cast votes to three players who they believe were the best and fairest players in that game. The best player receives three points, the second best two and the third best one. It is not possible to cast votes to players who have been suspended from the game during the season.

The Albert Goldthorpe Medal itself is a solid gold medal worth several thousand pounds. It contains a photograph of Albert Goldthorpe with "All Four Cups" ( Challenge Cup , RFL Championship , County League and County Cup).
