geography

Castleford is about 14 kilometers southeast of Leeds at the confluence of the River Aire with the River Calder .

history

At the time of the Romans, the Castrum Lagentium with camp suburb stood in the area of Castleford to secure the ford over the River Aire . No traces of settlement have been found from the time of the Anglo-Saxons , but the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle mentions a place called Ceaster forda for the year 948 . In any case, the place is not mentioned in the Domesday Book . The first written mention of a parish church took place between 1178 and 1184. From the Middle Ages to the Industrial Revolution, Castleford was an agricultural village with fewer than 1,000 residents. In the 19th century the population grew rapidly, as many jobs were created around the city with new coal mines. By 1890 15,000 people were already living in Castleford. When these coal mines were closed in the 20th century (and most recently the Kellingley coal mine in 2015 ), many of these jobs were lost again.

Sports

Castleford is the hometown of the Castleford Tigers , a rugby league club that plays in the Super League .
