Kellingley Colliery (2007)

The coal mine Kellingley is a disused coal mine of UK Coal Production in Beal , North Yorkshire . Production began in April 1965 and had two shafts with a depth of around 800 meters each. In its heyday it offered work for 2,000 miners and it was considered the largest underground mine in Europe.

With its closure on December 18, 2015, underground coal mining in the UK ended. Most recently 450 miners were employed there. The colliery was closed for purely economic reasons; the coal reserves that still exist there but have not been mined are estimated at around 30 million tons.
