The rugby league club Leeds St. Johns (later Leeds Rhinos) moved to Headingley in 1889 and built the Headingley Stadium there, which has since been gradually expanded. In 1966, turf heating and floodlights were installed . In 1970 and 1975 , Headingley Stadium hosted the final of the Rugby League World Cup . In 2006 the east terrace was replaced by the new Carnegie grandstand. In 2021, matches of the Rugby League World Cup are to take place in the stadium again.

The record number of spectators was 40,175, achieved at a rugby league match between Leeds and Bradford Northern on May 21, 1947. Today the stadium seats 22,250. The highest attendance at a game by Leeds Tykes (now Yorkshire Carnegie) was 14,293 on December 27, 2004 against the Newcastle Falcons .

Since January 11, 2006 the rugby stadium has been officially called Headingley Carnegie Stadium , named after Carnegie College of Leeds Metropolitan University , which holds the majority of shares in Leeds Rugby Limited.

Cricket stadium

The cricket stadium is directly adjacent to the rugby stadium and can seat 17,000 spectators. Test cricket games have been held here since 1889 . Preliminary round ( 1975 , 1979 , 1983 , 1999 ) and semi-finals ( 1975 ) took place here at all Cricket World Cups that were held in England .

Originally the entire facility was owned by Leeds Rugby Limited , the parent company of both rugby teams. On December 31, 2005, the Yorkshire Cricket County Club (YCCC) acquired the cricket ground and since October 11, 2006 the facility has been jointly managed by the YCCC and Leeds Rugby Limited.
