Mark Peter Regan MBE (born January 28, 1972 in Bristol ) is a retired English rugby union player . He played as a hooker for Bristol and was active for the English national team for years.
Career
Regan began rugby at Keynsham RFC at the age of eight and spent the remainder of his youth at St Brendan's Old Boys RFC and his hometown club. He went through all youth national teams in the country and was used for the first time in November 1995 for England's men's national team against South Africa . In 1997 he was nominated for the British and Irish Lions and played in the final game of the winning series. In the same year he moved to Bath , where he stayed for five years and won the Heineken Cup , among other things .
In 2003 Regan was nominated for the England squad for the 2003 World Cup and came to two missions. Due to an injury, he could not take part in the final, which brought England the first world title. At that time he was already playing for the Leeds Tykes , with whom he won the Powergen Cup there in his last season in 2005 . He went back to Bristol and returned to the national team in 2007 after almost three seasons off, and again took part in a World Cup. This time he was able to participate in the final of the tournament, which was lost to South Africa. He then led the Barbarians to a victory against the reigning world champion, although his club had refused to take part in this game and announced a penalty. At the Six Nations 2008 , he last played for England at the age of 36.
At the end of the 2008-09 season of the Guinness Premiership , he also ended his club career. In its final season, his hometown club rose to National Division One . In the near future he will be completing a coaching course at the English Association .
Regan's nickname "Ronnie" refers to former United States President Ronald Reagan . He is involved in the Wooden Spoon Society and the Bristol Children's Society, two charitable associations that support socially disadvantaged children and young people.
