The RFU Championship (until 2009 National Division One) is the second highest division of the English rugby union championship. It was introduced at the beginning of the 1987/88 season and consists of twelve teams. At the end of the season, the winners of the playoffs will be promoted to the English Premiership , while the two worst teams will be relegated to National League 1 .
The league is currently sponsored by the Greene King IPA Championship , after the Greene King Brewery .
