English rugby union championship 1997/98
The 1997/1998 season of the English Premiership was the eleventh season of the major division of the English Rugby Union Championship. For sponsorship reasons it was named Allied Dunbar Premiership . It began on August 23, 1997, comprised 22 game days (each a preliminary and second round) and lasted until May 17, 1998. The championship title won the Newcastle Falcons for the first time . At the end of the season, Bristol Rugby was relegated .

The season of the second division ( National Division One ) comprised 22 game days, each with a preliminary and a second half . The top two teams, Bedford Blues and West Hartlepool RFC , went straight to the Premiership, while third-placed London Scottish prevailed in a play-off against Bristol Rugby. Since the league was expanded by two teams in the following year, there were no relegated teams.
