The Exeter Chiefs are an English rugby union team that plays in the English Premiership .

history

The club was founded in 1871 and played the first game in 1873. In the first few years, the playing field was often changed and then for decades the county ground, where cricket was played, was used. The games have been played in Sandy Park since the 2006/07 season .

After the professionalization of rugby union in England in the mid-1990s, the club strove to belong to the top division in the long term. 1997 succeeded the promotion to the second highest division, the then National Division One, in which the Chiefs could establish themselves in the upper midfield. In the 2004/05, 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons, the Chiefs barely missed promotion to the Premiership as runner-up. They finally succeeded in 2010. In the 2016/17 season they won their first championship title after their best placement in the Premiership was 5th in the 2011/12 season.
