Douglas Charles Howlett (born September 21, 1978 in Auckland ) is a professional New Zealand rugby union player of partial Tongan ancestry. He mainly plays as an outside three-quarters , but he has experience in the position of goalkeeper nationally and internationally . He currently plays in the Irish province of Munster in the Magners League .
Career
Howlett started playing rugby at Auckland Grammar School . There he was also a star sprinter, captain of the track and field athletes and was "Head Prefect" during his last school year in 1996. He himself says that his speed as a sprinter had a big effect on his rugby career.
At the age of 18 he made his professional debut for Auckland in the National Provincial Championship . He also played for the Highlanders , Hurricanes and Blues in the Super 14 . With Munster Howlett won the Heineken Cup 2008 , the highest European cup in rugby union, in his first season , where they defeated Toulouse 16:13 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on May 24 .
He made his international debut for the All Blacks on June 16, 2000. Since then, he has averaged four points in every game (155 in his first 38). He was also part of the regular squad at the 2003 World Cup as an outside three-quarters .
Howlett has placed 49 attempts for the All Blacks, making it New Zealand's record holder. He is also the top attempt scorer in super rugby with 59 attempts. Howlett was named to the All Blacks squad for the 2007 Rugby World Cup , preferred to Tasman player Rico Gear . Nevertheless, he played in the first 3 rounds of the Air New Zealand Cup 2007, which were held in the run-up to the World Cup. Like other All Blacks players, Howlett went to a European rugby team after the 2007 Rugby World Cup. He decided on the Irish provincial team Munster, where the former New Zealand international Christian Cullen also played.
Howlett is one of the only two rugby players with Rod Kafer to win both the Super 14 and the Heineken Cup. He achieved this success with the Blues in 2003 and with Munster in 2008.
Foundation, endowment
On February 22nd, 2007 Howlett founded the Doug Howlett Outreach Foundation, which aims to provide financial support to New Zealand children aged 8-14 who have academic and athletic skills in rugby union, rugby league and netball . In particular, students are supported with school fees, school books and sports equipment.
