Rico Levi Gear (born February 26, 1978 in Gisborne ) is a New Zealand rugby union player. He is a specialized right outer three-quarters , but can also take on the inner three-quarter positions.
Career
Gear was educated at Gisborne Boys' High; he then studied anthropology for two years at Massey University , with a focus on the culture and language of the Māori . At the 1998 Commonwealth Games he played 7-a-side rugby and won the gold medal with the New Zealand team.
In 1997 he made his debut in provincial rugby, playing for Poverty Bay against King Country . Since then he has played for various provincial teams: Auckland , Bay of Plenty , North Harbor , Nelson Bays and Tasman. He made his Super 12 debut for the Blues against the Queensland Reds in 1999 . He also had a contract with the Highlanders , but his career only really got going when he joined the Crusaders at the end of the 2004 season . Gear completed every game in the 2005 season for the Crusaders, twelve as outer three-quarters and one as inner three-quarters, and made 15 attempts for the Super 12 winners of 2005. He was also Super 12 Player of the Year and Memorial Māori Player " of the year.
Gear made his international debut on July 10, 2004 in a game against the Pacific Islanders , in which he also scored a try. He then played several times against the British and Irish Lions during their tour to New Zealand in 2005. He was a regular outside three-quarters (No. 14) of the Crusaders in the 2006 Super 14 season. Gear has a younger brother named Hosea who plays as the outer three-quarters for Wellington and the Hurricanes . He also became a New Zealand national player in 2008.
Gear has signed a three-year contract with the English club Worcester Warriors and played after the end of the 2007 World Cup in the Guinness Premiership for the Worcester Warriors. In 2010 he moved to Japan to join the Kintetsu Liners .
