life and work

Manfred Richter was born in Dresden in 1929 as the son of a tram conductor. He first worked as a miner at Wismut , studied drama in Dresden and Berlin and at the DEFA young talent studio in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Nevertheless, he later decided to work as an art teacher and took his exam in Erfurt. It was there that Richter wrote his first work, the children's book The Magic Barrel , which made him known as a young author. Louis Fürnberg became aware of him and persuaded him to start studying at the "Johannes R. Becher" Institute in Leipzig, which he then did. Furthermore, a specialist training as a scriptwriter at the Babelsberg Film Academy followed.

Richter became a permanent writer at the German National Theater in Weimar , later a dramaturge at the State Theater in Dessau and finally a scriptwriter at the DEFA studio for feature films in Babelsberg. He wrote his first screenplay for the East German film production company in 1962 for and with Walter Beck : When Martin was 14 (based on a story by Hans Schönrock). After the 11th plenum of the Central Committee of the SED , he was dismissed in the mid-1960s because of differences of opinion on cultural policy at DEFA and in 1966 was transferred to the Wolfen film factory as artistic director of the Kulturhaus, where he worked until 1975. Since then he has been working as a freelance writer, interrupted by six years as a screenwriter at DEFA (1984–1990).

Richter wrote a number of scripts for around a dozen cinema and television films as well as various plays.
