characters
Fifteen-year-old Kaspar Schmeck comes from a poor family in a cobbler household in Kassel. He works as a kitchen boy in an inn where the former officer Emmerich lives as a permanent guest. When the advertisers come to town, he persuades the boy to go to America with him. Behind his back, he regulates the reporting as voluntary and collects the reward for it, which enables him to redeem his pledged uniform and thus advance his military career. In the course of the story, he exploited Schmeck's trust several times to safeguard his interests. So he persuades Kaspar to spy on the troops and repeatedly demands proof of loyalty from him, which ultimately leads to the death of Kaspar's friend Anselm. Count Friedrich von der Lippe basically corresponds to Friedrich II of Hessen-Kassel , who operated the soldier trade with Great Britain. The group of soldiers is diverse, including the student Anselm and especially the barber Ambrosius as caregivers. The older Ambrosius acts as the boy's fatherly friend and provides him with advice and assistance. Kaspar shares a tender love with Gundel, which through its violent end leads to Kaspar's change of opinion regarding the war and his relationship with Emmerich. This is portrayed as a brutal flayer, who nevertheless achieved the rise from captain to major.
