Agustín "Piru" Gaínza Vicandi (born May 28, 1922 in Basauri , Biscaya ; † January 6, 1995 ibid) was a Spanish - Basque football player . At club level he was able to celebrate great successes with Athletic Bilbao . With Spain he took part in the 1950 World Cup.

Gaínza was one of the most successful strikers in the history of Athletic Bilbao , the club for which he was exclusively active. From 1940 to 1959 he played 381 times in the Primera División and scored 120 goals. For a long time he was the captain and star of the team. Overall, he was nine times with Bilbao in the final of the Spanish Cup , then known as the Copa del Generalissimo , which he ultimately won seven times and thus more often than any other player in the history of the competition (1943, 1944, 1945, 1950, 1955, 1956 and 1958 ). In 1943 and 1956 he also won the Spanish championship.

For the Spanish national football team , he completed 33 games between 1945 and 1955 and scored ten times. At the Soccer World Cup in Brazil in 1950 , he led the team as captain to 4th place.

After his active career, he coached Athletic Bilbao from 1965 to 1969.
