Bernard Munyagishari

Bernard Munyagishari (* 1959 ) is a Rwandan war criminal. He was wanted by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) for his role in the Rwandan genocide and was finally caught in North Kivu on May 25, 2011 .

Life

Munyagishari was secretary general of the Mouvement républicain national pour la démocratie et le développement (MRND) from 1992 to 1994 .

In 2005 the ICTR issued an arrest warrant for genocide , crimes against humanity and rape . On his arrest, the US state program Rewards for Justice advertised five million dollars.

According to the ICTR, Munyagishari is said to have been a co-founder and leader of the Interahamwe . He is said to have recruited Hutu , trained them and ordered them to systematically murder Tutsi in Gisenyi and the surrounding area and to rape women. He is also said to have attended a meeting of Planning Minister Augustin Ngirabatware on April 7, 1994 , at which the genocide was planned. He is said to have drawn up lists of Tutsi citizens and organized buses for the Interahamwe fighters.

On April 20, 2017, he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the ICTR judges. He appealed, the appeal process is still pending.
