history

In the dispute over the leadership of the Songhai Empire , a group of Songhai fled to Anzourou at the end of the 15th century. In this inaccessible area, the Songhai long held their own against outside influences and against attempts by the Gao Empire and the Tuareg to subdue them. In 1899, Anzourou came under French military administration as part of the newly created Sinder district ( cercle de Sinder ) . In 1905 Anzourou became part of the new military territory of Niger ( Territoire militaire du Niger ). Around 1906 there was an uprising of the Songhai against the French colonial rulers near Anzourou, which was suppressed with a strict hand. During a nationwide administrative reform in 2002, the rural community of Anzourou emerged from the canton of Anzourou of the same name . During the hunger crisis in Niger in 2005, Anzourou was one of the hardest hit places. Here the population had less than one meal a day available.

At the 2001 census, Anzourou had 23,871 inhabitants. For 2010, 31,564 inhabitants were calculated.
