Sakoïra (also: Sakouara ) is a rural community in the Tillabéri department in Niger .

geography

Sakoïra is located on the Niger River in the southern Sahel region . The neighboring communities are Anzourou and Bibiyergou in the north, Ouallam and Tondikiwindi in the east, Kourteye in the south and Sinder and Tillabéri in the west. There are seven villages, 67 hamlets and four camps in the municipality. The main town of the rural community is the village of Sakoïra. Another large village in the municipality is Diambala .

history

In the 19th century, Sakoïra suffered from raids by the Zarma from N'Dounga . The place came under French military administration in 1899 as part of the newly created Sinder district . In 1905 Sakoïra was annexed to the Niger Military Territory, from which the French Niger Colony and finally the independent Republic of Niger in 1960 emerged. The rural community Sakoïra was created as an administrative unit during a nationwide administrative reform in 2002. The territory of the canton Tillabéri / Sakoïra was divided into the communities Sakoïra, Bibiyergou and Tillabéri. During the floods in 2008, several houses and huts were destroyed and fields were flooded. 784 residents were classified as victims.

population

At the 2012 census, Sakoïra had 26,776 inhabitants. The population at the 2001 census was 20,186. In the main town, 90% of the Zarma ethnic group belong to the community , alongside Tuareg , Fulbe and Hausa , who have moved here as traders .

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in a zone where rain-fed agriculture is practiced. Agriculture is the main occupation of the population. Seasonal labor migration abroad is also important. It is practiced by half of the main male population between the ages of 18 and 45. Its main destinations are Ghana , Lomé , Benin , the Ivory Coast and Gabon .

There are several weekly markets in Sakoïra. The market day in the main town is Monday, but the most important weekly market is held in the village of Bonfeba. There are several health centers ( Centers de Santé Intégré ) available to the population . A citizen radio in the main town broadcasts within a radius of 30 kilometers. National Road 1 runs through Sakoïra and connects the town with the capital Niamey in the south and the state border with Mali in the north.
