Ouallam is a municipality and the capital of the Ouallam department of the same name in Niger .

geography

Ouallam is located in the southern Sahel . The neighboring communities are Tondikiwindi in the north, Dingazi in the east, Simiri in the south, Kourteye in the southwest and Sakoïra in the northwest. The municipality is divided into eleven districts, 35 administrative villages, seven traditional villages and 148 hamlets. The neighborhoods are Administratif, Gadama Windi, Gao Tchiré, Goroutché, Koira Tégui, Kongodabey, Mossi Windi, Niamassal, Soudjé, Tchemou Windi and Tribu Agala.

history

The city's name comes from the word willim , which means "forest". The area of ​​Ouallam was once heavily forested, which changed drastically due to human interference and climatic changes. The sterility of the soil repeatedly led to famine and mass emigration.

population

At the 1977 census, Ouallam had 3,712 people, at the 1988 census 6,229 people and at the 2001 census 7,142 people. For the year 2010, after an expansion of the municipal area to include parts of the dissolved canton of Ouallam, 66,798 inhabitants were calculated. The most important ethnic group in the city are the Zarma . The Fulbe and Tuaregs live particularly in the north and northwest of the urban area , who move to Tondikiwindi in search of pastureland in the rainy season.

Economy and Infrastructure

The city is located in a zone in which mainly rain-fed agriculture is practiced. Labor migration abroad is also of economic importance . At the Ouallam market, cowpeas and grain are traded to the Nigerien capital Niamey as well as Benin and Nigeria . The city is the seat of a Tribunal d'Instance, one of the country's 30 civil courts , which are below the ten civil courts of the first instance (Tribunal de Grande Instance). National Road 24 runs through Ouallam and connects the city with Niamey and the state border with Mali near Banibangou . Ouallam has a civil airport with an unpaved runway, Ouallam Airport ( ICAO code : DRRU).
