Banibangou (also: Bani Bangou ) is a rural community and the capital of the Banibangou department of the same name in Niger .

geography

Banibangou is located in the Sahel zone and borders the neighboring state of Mali in the north . The neighboring communities in Niger are Abala in the east, Dingazi and Filingué in the south and Tondikiwindi in the west. The municipality is divided into 28 administrative villages, 65 traditional villages, 17 hamlets, nine camps and three water points. The main town of the rural community is Banibangou, consisting of the administrative villages of Bani Bangou Djerma and Banibangou Haoussa. A side valley of the Wadi Dallol Bosso runs through the municipality .

history

The place name means "good pond". Banibangou received 1964 the status of an administrative post ( French : poste administratif ). The deputy gendarmerie commander was killed in an attack by the Aïr and Azawad Liberation Front on Banibangou in 1992. The rural community (French: commune rurale ) Banibangou was established as an administrative unit in 2002 when the canton of Tondikiwindi was divided into the newly created rural communities of Tondikiwindi and Banibangou. In 2008 floods caused material damage, which directly affected over 800 residents. The administrative post of Banibangou was removed from the Ouallam department in 2011 and elevated to the Banibangou department. At the border town of Siné Godar in the municipality of Banibangou, a refugee camp was set up in 2012 for people who fled in the course of the conflict in northern Mali . In 2020, 88 people were killed and several injured in a terrorist attack on the Siné Godar military post.

population

At the 2001 census, Banibangou had 40,351 residents. For 2010, 53,395 inhabitants were calculated. The majority of the population are Zarma , followed by the Fulbe , Tuareg and Hausa .

In 2011, 99% of the population of Banibangou were classified as poor or very poor in a study by the French non-governmental organization ACTED. More than 66% of the population had no access to latrines in the vicinity.

Economy and Infrastructure

The population lives mainly from cattle breeding, agriculture and trade. The parish is located at the transition from the agropastoral zone of the south to the zone of pure grazing in the north. The national road 24 runs through Banibangou, which connects the place with the Nigerien capital Niamey , but cannot be used in the rainy season. The remote location is one of the structural reasons for the recurring food insecurity in the community, which is severely affected by emigration to the capital and abroad.
