The department is located in the southwest of the country and borders Mali . It consists of the township of Ouallam and the rural parishes of Dingazi , Simiri and Tondikiwindi . The eponymous capital of the department is Ouallam.

history

After Niger gained independence in 1960, the national territory was divided into 32 districts ( circonscriptions ). One of them was the Djermaganda district, with the main town Ouallam. 1964 an administrative reform divided Niger into seven departments, the predecessors of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements, the predecessors of the later departments. In the course of this, the Djermaganda district was converted into the Ouallam arrondissement.

In 1998, the previous Arrondissements of Niger were elevated to departments, each headed by a prefect appointed by the Council of Ministers. The department has been divided into municipalities since 2002. Before that, it consisted of the urban center Ouallam and the cantons of Ouallam, Simiri and Tondikiwindi. In 2011, Banibangou was separated from the Ouallam department as a separate department. As a result of the conflict in northern Mali , the Niger government decreed a state of emergency in the department of Ouallam and six other departments in March 2017 , which was subsequently extended several times.

population

According to the 2012 census, the Ouallam department has 323,939 inhabitants. In the 2001 census, before the separation of Banibangou, there were 281,821 inhabitants, in the 1988 census 190,057 inhabitants and in the 1977 census 143,431 inhabitants. Ouallam is one of the poorest departments in Niger.

administration

At the head of the department is a prefect (French: préfet ) who is appointed by the Council of Ministers on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior .
