history

After Niger gained independence in 1960, the national territory was divided into 32 districts ( circonscriptions ). One of them was the Say district. 1964 an administrative reform divided Niger into seven departments, the predecessors of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements , the predecessors of the later departments. In the course of this, the district of Say was converted into the Arrondissement Say. Moutari Moussa , later President of the National Assembly , headed the arrondissement as sub-prefect from 1981 to 1983 .

In 1998, the previous Arrondissements of Niger were elevated to departments, each headed by a prefect appointed by the Council of Ministers. The department has been divided into municipalities since 2002. Before that, it consisted of the urban center Say and the cantons Say, Guéladio, Tamou and Torodi. In 2011, Torodi was separated from the Say department as a separate department.

population

According to the 2012 census, the Say department has 174,211 inhabitants. In the 2001 census, before the separation of Torodi, there were 232,460 inhabitants, in the 1988 census 162,888 inhabitants and in the 1977 census 97,486 inhabitants.

administration

At the head of the department is a prefect (French: préfet ) who is appointed by the Council of Ministers on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior .
