The department is located in the southwest of the country and borders on Niamey , the capital of Niger. It consists of the urban parish of Kollo and the rural parishes of Bitinkodji , Dantchandou , Hamdallaye , Karma , Kirtachi , Kouré , Liboré , N'Dounga , Namaro and Youri . The eponymous capital of the department is Kollo.

history

An administrative reform in 1964 divided Niger into seven departments, the predecessors of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements , the predecessors of the later departments. The area of ​​Kollo was added to the Arrondissement Niamey together with the urban area of ​​Niamey , which goes back to a district ( circonscription ) of the same name. In 1980 the city of Niamey was detached from the arrondissement and the remaining area was renamed Arrondissement Kollo . The later Prime Minister Mahamadou Danda coordinated the relocation of the administration to the new capital Kollo .

In 1998 the previous Arrondissements of Nigers were converted into departments, each headed by a prefect appointed by the Council of Ministers. The department has been divided into municipalities since 2002. Before that, it consisted of the urban center Kollo and the cantons of N'Dounga, Fakara, Hamdallaye, Karma, Kirtachi, Kouré, Lamordé , Liboré and Namaro.

According to the 2012 census, the Kollo department has 465,303 inhabitants. In the 2001 census it was 325,706 inhabitants, in the 1988 census 231,029 inhabitants and in the 1977 census 131,145 inhabitants.
