Gothèye is a department in the region of Tillabéri in Niger .

geography

The department is located in the south-west of the country and borders Burkina Faso . It consists of the rural parishes of Dargol and Gothèye . The eponymous capital of the department is Gothèye.

history

The department goes back to the administrative post ( poste administratif ) of Gothèye, which was established in 1956. In 2011 the administrative post was removed from the Téra department and elevated to the Gothèye department.

population

The Gothèye department has 241,401 inhabitants according to the 2012 census. From 2001 to 2012 the number of inhabitants rose by an average of 3.9% annually (nationwide: also 3.9%). The majority of the population belongs to the Songhai - Zarma and Fulbe ethnic groups .

administration

At the head of the department is a prefect (French: préfet ) who is appointed by the Council of Ministers on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior .
