Bankilare is a department in the region of Tillabéri in Niger .
geography
The department is located in the south-west of the country and borders Burkina Faso . It extends over the territory of the rural municipality of the same name, Bankilaré . In elections to the National Assembly, the Bankilaré department forms one of eight special constituencies across the country. While the regular constituencies, in which a certain number of MPs are elected, correspond to the eight regions of Niger, those entitled to vote in the special constituencies each elect their own MP.
history
The department goes back to the administrative post ( poste administratif ) of Bankilaré, which was established in 1959. In 2011, the administrative post was removed from the Téra department and raised to the Bankilaré department. As a result of the conflict in northern Mali , the Niger government issued a state of emergency in the department of Bankilaré and six other departments in March 2017 , which was subsequently extended several times.
population
According to the 2012 census, the Bankilaré department has 84,543 inhabitants. From 2001 to 2012 the number of inhabitants rose by an average of 3.9% annually (nationwide: also 3.9%).
administration
At the head of the department is a prefect (French: préfet ) who is appointed by the Council of Ministers on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior .
