Gothèye (also: Gothey , Gothéye ) is a rural municipality and the capital of the Gothèye department of the same name in Niger .

geography

Gothèye is located in the southern Sahel region south of the regional capital Tillabéri on the Niger River . The neighboring communities are Tillabéri and Sinder in the north, Kourteye in the east, Namaro in the south and Dargol in the west.

There are 52 villages, 96 hamlets and three camps in the municipality. The main town of the rural municipality is the village of Gothèye. The next largest village in terms of inhabitants is Koulikoira .

The Dargol River flows into the Niger in the municipality .

history

The villages Saya and Zarakoira in the municipality of Gothèye were among those places in what is now Niger, where after the fall of the Songhai Oak's 1591 Songhai -Flüchtlinge under a descendant of the former ruling dynasty Askia settled.

Around 1844 Gothèye was attacked by Silanké, a subgroup of the Fulbe who came from Dori in Liptako . They received support from a strong Zarma contingent. An alliance of Songhai and Tuareg defeated the attackers. The Tuareg, under their leader Sinafal, drove the Silanké outside the walls of Say . The German African explorer Heinrich Barth visited several villages in Gothèye in 1854, for which he used the spelling "Gōte". Barth described, among other things, the Fulbe village of Kassani ("Ka-ssánni"), surrounded by cornfields, the villages of Bossia ("Bō-sse") and Hondobon ("Hendōbo"). In 1899, the Gothèye area came under French military administration as part of the newly created Sinder district ( cercle de Sinder ) .

In 1964, an administrative reform divided Niger into seven departments, the predecessors of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements, the predecessors of the later departments. Gothèye was added to the newly created Arrondissement Téra , but received - like Bankilaré - the status of an administrative post ( poste administratif ) in the area of the Arrondissement. Administrative posts were special territorial units one level below the arrondissements, which were regarded as a kind of preliminary stage for a later conversion into a separate arrondissement. In 1998, the previous Arrondissements of Nigers were converted into departments. The village of Larba Birno was affected by the flood disaster in West and Central Africa in 2010 . There 294 residents were classified as disaster victims. The administrative post of Gothèye was removed from the department of Téra in 2011 and raised to the department of Gothèye.

population

At the 2012 census, Gothèye had 93,264 inhabitants. The population at the 2001 census was 64,656.

The Zarma dialect Kaado is spoken in Gothèye .

Culture and sights

In the middle of the main town, near the market and opposite the mayor's residence, there is a mosque of unknown year of construction. In 1986 it showed erosion damage caused by splashing water close to the ground. The entire facility has an area of 255 square meters. The prayer room building is made as a longitudinal system. The mosque has no courtyard. A mihrab -Vorbau is not here exceptionally. The outer walls are not structured with the exception of the west facade. In this is the central portal with a double-leaf wooden door, framed by profiled half-pillars. A side entrance with a corrugated iron door is located on the south wall. Twelve steep steps lead to the Adhān platform located there.

The villages of Koulikoira and Saya are centers of the Djesseré . This is a special kind of narrator who passes on historical traditions in long lectures.

Economy and Infrastructure

Wet rice is grown along the river . The rest of the municipality is located in a zone where rain-fed agriculture is predominant. In the village of Kakassi, part of Gothèye, wicker, pottery and traditional soap are made. There are several weekly markets in the municipality. The large Monday market in the main town also attracts traders from the capital Niamey . Pottery, mortars and pestles , mats made from palm leaves and grain wings as well as onions, red peppers and peanuts are sold here. The Wednesday market in Koulikoira village specializes in mats used for fencing called tatara . There are also vegetables grown on the river such as onions and potatoes to buy. The Wednesday market in Garbey Kouro village is medium in size. It's mainly a food market. At the small Saturday market in the village of Larba Birno, spices, potatoes and onions are traded. National road 4 runs through Gothèye and connects the town with the neighboring municipality of Namaro and the state border with Burkina Faso near Téra .
