Location of Saya in Niger

Saya is a village in the Gothèye rural community in Niger .

The village, run by a traditional local chief ( chef traditionnel ), is located around seven kilometers southeast of Gothèye, the capital of the rural municipality of the same name, which belongs to the Gothèye department in the Tillabéri region. Saya is located on the right bank of the Niger River . The larger villages in the area include Zarakoira in the northwest and Sorbon Haoussa in the east.

Saya was one of those places in present-day Niger where, after the fall of the Songha Empire in 1591, Songhai refugees settled under descendants of the Askiya ruling dynasty .

At the 2012 census, Saya had 1,588 residents who lived in 219 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 1,408 in 172 households, and at the 1988 census, the population was 1,054 in 128 households.

A relatively large number of Djesseré live in Saya , a special type of narrator who passes on historical traditions in long lectures. National road 4 runs along the river bank . Onions, lettuce, calabash and cabbage, as well as guavas , mangos and lemons are grown in the gardens of Saya . The cultivation is primarily for personal use, since the fruit and vegetables, with the exception of onions and calabash fruits, are perishable and the nearest urban centers are far away.
