geography

Sinder lies on both banks of the Niger River northwest of the regional capital Tillabéri . The neighboring communities are Dessa in the north, Bibiyergou in the northeast, Sakoïra in the east, Tillabéri in the southeast, Gothèye in the south, Dargol and Kokorou in the southwest and Méhana in the west. From a climatic point of view, the municipality belongs to the Sahel zone , from a geological point of view to the older Precambrian . The settlements in the municipality are 27 villages and 75 hamlets. The main town of the rural community is the village of Sawani .

Sinder is not to be confused with the former Nigerien capital Zinder , which is also referred to as Sinder, especially in older German-language publications - for example in the travel descriptions of the German Africa researcher Heinrich Barth .

history

Sinder in Stieler's Hand Atlas (1891)

Heinrich Barth, who camped in front of the settlement in 1854, for which he used the spelling Ssínder , estimated its population including an offshore island settlement at 16,000 to 18,000 and described it as a regionally important grain market. During the military occupation of the later Niger colony by France in 1899 , Sinder was the first place where a French military base was set up, along with Doulsou and Yatakala . Sinder became the capital of the district of Sinder ( cercle de Sinder ), which included the areas of today's departments of Téra and Tillabéri . As early as July 1900, Doulsou became the district's capital. In 1905 Sinder was annexed to the new military territory of Niger ( Territoire militaire du Niger ). Later the supra-regional importance of the place waned.

population

At the 2012 census, Sinder had 28,165 residents who lived in 3,861 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 25,133 in 3,530 households.

Economy and Infrastructure

Sinder is located in an agricultural area where rice and millet are grown. The townscape is characterized by round granaries.
