Dessa (also: Desa ) is a rural community in the Tillabéri department in Niger .

geography

Dessa is located in the Sahel zone and lies northwest of the regional capital Tillabéri on the Niger River . The neighboring communities of Dessas are Ayérou in the north, Anzourou in the east, Bibiyergou and Sinder in the south and Bankilaré , Kokorou and Méhana in the west. The municipality is divided into 17 administrative villages, one traditional village and 73 hamlets. The main town of the rural municipality is the administrative village of Dessa.

history

The inhabitants of the Dessa settlement, members of the Kurtey people , were exposed to constant attacks by the Tuareg group Rhattafan in the 19th century . The only safe haven of the Kurtey was the river and especially an island opposite the riverside village Dessa, which was also called Dessa. In 1899 the Dessa area came under French military administration as part of the newly created Sinder district . In 1905 Dessa was attached to the new military territory of Niger. The French colonial administration established a canton in Dessa in 1906 and appointed the pre-colonial chief of Dessa, a Kurtey, as head of the canton.

The territory of the canton of Dessa was expanded in 1933 to include the administrative villages of Diamona, Katanga (Sassalé), Nassiré, Tondia and Wali. These were settlements of the Bella , former slaves of the Rhattafan, who were now subordinate to the Kurtey local chief of Dessa. This intensified the rivalry between Rhattafan and Kurtey. Until 1960, the Kurtey canton chief preferred to reside on the island of Dessa instead of in the main town of Dessa for security reasons. In 2002, the canton of Dessa was transformed into the rural municipality of Dessa as part of a state-wide administrative reform. Attempts by the Rhattafan to detach the Bella village of Tondia and the surrounding area from Dessa failed.

population

At the 2001 census, Dessa had 31,028 inhabitants. For 2010, 41,069 inhabitants were calculated.

Economy and Infrastructure

Important infrastructural facilities in the municipality are not located in the capital Dessa, but in the administrative village of Famalé in the center of the municipality. The reason for this lies in the distrust of the then head of the Canton of Dessa against French rule, which he did not want to have too close to his residence. The school opened in 1955, the infirmary opened in 1956 and the rural community's agricultural office opened in 1960 are therefore all located in Famalé.

The community is located in a zone where agropastoralism is practiced. The national road 1 runs through Dessa, which connects the town with the capital Niamey in the south and the state border with Mali in the north.
