Location of Yatakala in Niger

Yatakala is a village in the Gorouol rural community in western Niger .

The village, run by a traditional mayor, is located in the west of the Gorouol municipality near the state border with Burkina Faso . It is the northern end of the national road 5 coming from the departmental capital Téra . The Béli River flows into the Gorouol near the village .

The Yasaan pearls found at Yatakala date from the period from 640 to 1170. These are small terracotta balls that were found in a similar shape in Mali and sold to tourists in large numbers. In the course of the military occupation of the later Niger colony by France, Yatakala was, along with Doulsou and Sinder, the first place where a French military base was set up in 1899. This was given up again in 1903. In 2000, Yatakala became one of three bases of a joint brigade of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali. The other two bases were set up in Labbézanga in Mali and in Maretei in Burkina Faso. The 500-strong brigade was created to provide humanitarian aid, control the transport of light firearms, and ensure the safety of people and goods at border crossings.

At the 2012 census, Yatakala had 3,193 residents who lived in 350 households. At the 2001 census the population was 2,226, at the 1988 census it was 2,547.
