history

The place name Hamdallaye is derived from the Arabic phrase Alhamdulillah . The traditional mansion ( French : chefferie ) of the Zarma in Hamdallaye was created in the middle of the 17th century. The French colonial administration set up a canton in Hamdallaye in the first third of the 20th century, thereby releasing the place from the sphere of influence of the chefferie of the neighboring town of N'Dounga. The rural community of Hamdallaye emerged from the canton of Hamdallaye in 2002 as part of a state-wide administrative reform. In 2007 it was one of the venues for the first edition of the Pripalo open air cultural festival under the direction of Achirou Wagé .

population

At the 2012 census, Hamdallaye had 57,002 residents who lived in 6147 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 40,110 in 4,276 households. The majority of the population are Zarma , and Fulbe , Bella , Hausa and Gourmantché also live in the rural community.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in a zone where rain-fed agriculture is practiced. Millet and sorghum are grown for self-sufficiency . Growing cowpeas , peanuts, pumpkins, okra , sesame seeds and onions is also common. Fruit trees thrive near watering holes. The extensively -powered agriculture suffers inter alia, insufficient and irregular rainfall, soil degradation and outdated equipment. The most widespread economic activity in Hamdallaye after farming is livestock, which includes cattle, camels, donkeys, horses, sheep, goats, and poultry. Sedentary cattle breeding is the domain of women. In transhumant livestock farming, the farmers use pastures in the north - in Ouallam , Filingué and Mali - and south of the community on the Niger River . The main problems are lack of food and animal diseases.

More than an eighth of the population are migrant workers who spend two to three months a year in the capital Niamey and in other countries. Due to the poverty of the population and the remoteness of the rural community, trade is poorly developed. There are eight weekly markets in Hamdallaye. The manual activities of women, such as weaving and hat-making, are primarily impaired by a lack of materials and competition from imported products.

More than half of the classrooms in the 49 public elementary schools in the rural community are simple thatched huts. In the main town there is a health center (French: Center de Santé Intégre ) and a medicine depot. The number and skills of medical staff are insufficient. National Road 25 runs through Hamdallaye and runs from Niamey to Tébaram in the Tahoua department .
