Simiri is a rural municipality in the department of Ouallam in Niger .

geography

Simiri is located in the southern Sahel region . The neighboring communities are Ouallam in the north, Dingazi in the northeast, Tondikandia in the east, Tagazar in the southeast, Hamdallaye in the south, Karma in the southwest and Kourteye in the west. The municipality is divided into 73 administrative villages, twelve traditional villages, 379 hamlets and twelve camps. The main town of the rural community is the village of Simiri.

history

Simiri was ruled by Kallé leaders in the 19th century . Kallé are a subgroup of the Zarma . The rural community of Simiri emerged from the canton of Simiri in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform. In 2008 floods destroyed 57 huts and damaged 165 residents.

population

At the 2001 census, Simiri had 76,783 inhabitants. For the year 2010 101,627 inhabitants were calculated.

Culture and sights

Simiri was a frequent location for filmmaker Jean Rouch . Starting with the film Yenendi, les hommes qui font la pluie , which was made in 1951, Rouch primarily documented various aspects of the traditional rain ritual yenendi . In the 1970s, this happened against the background of the severe drought in the Sahel . Rouch last shot in Simiri in 1979.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in a zone where rain-fed agriculture is practiced. Labor migration abroad is also of economic importance . The national road 24 runs through Simiri and connects the place with the Nigerien capital Niamey and the state border with Mali near Banibangou .
