Tagazar is a rural municipality in the department Balleyara in Niger .

geography

Tagazar is located in the southern Sahel in the valley of the seasonally water-bearing dry valley Dallol Bosso . The neighboring municipalities are Tondikandia in the north, Loga in the east, Dantchandou and Koygolo in the south, Hamdallaye in the west and Simiri in the northwest. The settlements in the municipality are 111 villages, 85 hamlets and 8 city districts. The main town of the rural community is Balleyara .

history

The name Tagazar comes from the Tamaschek word taharzert , which means "small pond". The first Tuareg groups settled in the area in the 18th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Tuareg leader Hatta Alissen Tabla founded the village of Tabla as one of the first permanent Tuareg settlements in the Tagazar area. Hatta Alissen Tabla was followed by Harhmet, Abderraman, Dargou, Amma, Atta and - in 1901 - Mizza as rulers. According to tradition, the village of Kogori was founded by the Zarma leader Kandi. Until the arrival of the French at the beginning of the 20th century, the Tuareg of Tagazar were in constant conflict with the Zarma.

The French made Tagazar a canton , the capital of which was initially in the village of Sandiré . In 1922, Sandiré was replaced by the village of Tabla. A few years after an administrative post was established in the village of Balleyara in 1972, Balleyara finally became the capital of Tagazar. In the course of a nationwide administrative reform in 2002, the canton of Tagazar became the rural municipality of Tagazar. In 2008, floods destroyed 53 houses and 25 huts in the community. More than 2,200 people suffered material damage. During the flood disaster in West and Central Africa in 2010 , Tagazar was less affected than other places in Niger, 840 inhabitants were classified as victims of the disaster. The administrative post of Balleyara was elevated to a department in 2011. Since then, Tagazar no longer belongs to the Filingué department , but to the Balleyara department.

population

At the 2012 census, Tagazar had 107,134 inhabitants who lived in 13,161 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 95,763 in 11,147 households. Over 70% of the population are Tuareg. The Zarma, Fulbe and Hausa ethnic groups form minorities in the community .

Economy and Infrastructure

The high groundwater level favors arable farming. This attracts immigrants in particular from the barren department of Ouallam in the north. Sheep and goats play an important role in animal husbandry. Another important industry is leather processing. The regular passage of transhumant ranchers, locally known as Oudah , brings about land use conflicts that are often fatal. In the main town of Balleyara there is a market that is particularly important for the trade in cattle and millet. The market day is Sunday. Tagazar is located on National Road 23 leading to Dogondoutchi and on National Road 25 , which connects the place with the Nigerien capital Niamey .
