Dogondoutchi is located at the transition from the Sudan to the Sahel region near the state border with Nigeria . The cityscape is characterized by a 260  m high table mountain in the northeast of the city, which also bears the name Dogondoutchi . Dogondoutchi means "upper rock".

The road network is partly laid out in a ring around the city center. The urban area is divided into 15 districts, 16 administrative villages, 62 traditional villages, four hamlets and nine camps. The neighborhoods are Agadez, Baghdad, Bozaroua Doutchi, Bozaroua Koré, Chama, Damago, Danni Konna, Guijia Allage, Guijia Mayaki, Konaoua, Maïzari, Oubandawaki, Sarkin Noma, Tantchia and Wadata. The neighboring communities of Dogondoutchis are Soucoucoutane in the north, Matankari in the northeast, Dan-Kassari in the east, Kiéché in the southeast, Koré Maïroua in the south, Tombokoirey II in the southwest and Falwel in the west.

The large, periodically water-bearing dry valley Dallol Maouri runs through the east of the municipality in a north-south direction . The dry valley Dallol Foga has its origin in the west .

history

The area around Dogondoutchi was initially populated by the Arewa and the Gubawa, the subgroups of the Maouri, who in turn are a subgroup of the Hausa and differ from the other Hausa through special scarifications . Dogondoutchi was probably founded at the end of the 18th century as a village of the Konawa, a subgroup of the Arewa.

In the course of the occupation of French West Africa , officers Paul Voulet and Julien Chanoine were the first French to penetrate into the disputed area between France and Great Britain in 1899 . In 1906 a British military post was established in Dogondoutchi, which was soon taken over by the French. These moved the seat of the regional colonial administration from Matankari to Dogondoutchi. The Sarkin, the traditional head of the Arewa, also moved his official residence from Matankari to Dogondoutchi, where he is still today.

Until 1972, only the major cities of Niamey , Maradi , Tahoua and Zinder had the status of an independent municipality in Niger . This year, Dogondoutchi was raised to parish at the same time as six other Nigerien towns. In 2008 over 5,600 people suffered material damage in the floods. Dogondoutchi was less affected than other places in Niger by the flood disaster in West and Central Africa in 2010 , 240 inhabitants were classified as victims of the disaster.

population

In 1948, 4,330 people lived in the city. In the 1977 census, Dogondoutchi had 14,629 inhabitants, in the 1988 census 20,407 inhabitants and in the 2001 census 29,244 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 71,692.

The Konawa, together with other sub-groups of the Arewa, form the majority population. Small groups of Zarma , Tuareg and Fulbe also live in the city .

politics

In the local elections in July 2004, Bagoudou Souley ( PNDS-Tarayya ) was elected mayor. On April 15, 2010, the Council of Ministers appointed Adamou Hamidou as Administrator ( Administrateur Délégué ) of the municipality.

Culture and sights

The Great Mosque and the chefferie face each other in the old city center. On a chair in front of the chefferie , Sarkin holds court to Arewa. This is where community affairs are discussed and decisions are made.

Even if Dogondoutchi is predominantly Islamic , the city and nearby villages such as Lougou are centers of the traditional African religion of Azna . The Bori cult is typical of the Azna of Dogondoutchi . There is also a Roman Catholic parish in the city , founded by Redemptorists in 1947 and belonging to the Archdiocese of Niamey .

The hero of the successful novel Barga, maître de la brousse (1937) written by Jean Sermaye and its sequel Barga l'invincible (1941) comes from Dogondoutchi.

Economy and Infrastructure

There is a small daily market in the middle of the old city center and a large market on the road to Niamey which is market day every Friday. Dogondoutchi lies on the national road 1 , which here part of the Dakar N'Djamena highways , and at the after Tagazar leading National Straße 23 . The city is served by all four major bus companies in the country. Dogondoutchi has a civil airport with an unpaved runway, Dogondoutchi Airport ( ICAO code : DRRD).

Dogondoutchi is the seat of a Tribunal d'Instance, one of the nation's 30 civil courts , which are below the ten civil courts of the first instance (Tribunal de Grande Instance), and the Association d'action contre le SIDA (ASASI) . The non-governmental organization is dedicated to raising awareness about AIDS and also organizes cultural events in the city.
