Soucoucoutane (also: Soukoukoutane ) is a rural community in the Dogondoutchi department in Niger .

geography

Soucoucoutane is located in the southern Sahel . The neighboring communities are Kourfeye Center in the northwest, Dogonkiria in the northeast, Matankari in the southeast, Dogondoutchi in the south and Loga in the southwest. The municipality is divided into 14 administrative villages, 68 traditional villages, seven hamlets and two camps. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Soucoucoutane (also: Soukoukoutan).

The large, periodically water-bearing dry valley Dallol Maouri runs through the municipality in a north-south direction . There is a high risk of flooding in Soucoucoutane.

history

The rural community of Soucoucoutane emerged as an administrative unit in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the north-western part of the canton of Dogondoutchi.

population

At the 2001 census, Soucoucoutane had 26,888 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 38,700.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community lies at the transition from the zone of rain-fed agriculture in the south to the zone of agropastoralism in the north. 97% of the population of Soucoucoutane work in agriculture. The groundwater level lies at a depth of 50 to 400 meters, which makes it difficult to access drinking water.
