Koré Maïroua is a rural municipality in the department of Tibiri in Niger .

geography

Koré Maïroua is located in the greater Sudan landscape and borders the neighboring state of Nigeria in the east . The neighboring communities in Niger are Dogondoutchi in the north, Kiéché in the northeast, Tibiri in the south and Tombokoirey II in the west. The municipality is divided into 30 administrative villages, 109 traditional villages, 31 hamlets and two camps. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Koré Maïroua.

The large, periodically water-bearing dry valley Dallol Maouri runs through the east of the municipality in a north-south direction .

history

The rural community Koré Maïroua emerged in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the canton Tibiri, whose territory was divided into the rural communities Tibiri, Douméga and Koré Maïroua. Since 2011, the rural community no longer belongs to the Dogondoutchi department , but to the newly created Tibiri department.

population

At the 2001 census, Koré Maïroua had 42,592 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 54,251. The population consists of Hausa and Fulbe . In addition to members of the Islamic faith, there is a Christian minority who mainly live in the administrative villages of Dadin Kowa, Golo and Koré Maïroua.

Economy and Infrastructure

Millet, cowpeas , sorghum and peanuts are grown in all the villages in the municipality, and sugar cane in the village of Zéla . Livestock farming includes cattle, sheep, goats, camels, horses and donkeys. It is increasingly restricted by a lack of grazing land. Koré Maïroua is located on National Road 1 , which is part of the Dakar-N'Djamena Highway , as well as on National Road 2 to Farey and on National Road 3 to Karguibangou .

The three main weekly markets are located in the administrative villages of Koré Maïroua, Boureimi and Zéla. There is cross-border informal trade with neighboring Nigeria . The school enrollment rate in the rural community is 59.6%, for boys 70.1% and for girls 49.2%.
