Location of Balleyara in Niger

Balleyara (also: Baléyara ) is a small town in Niger . It is the capital of the rural community of Tagazar and the Balleyara department of the same name .

geography

Balleyara is located about 85 kilometers northeast of the Nigerien capital Niamey on the dry valley Dallol Bosso . The urban area is divided into eight district (quarters) divided. Aggou, Château, Jidakamat, OPVN, Tourakou, Zargagadan, Zongo and Zongo II Larger villages around Balleyara are Fandou Mayaki in the northwest, Damana in the Northeast, Tabla in the southeast and Winditane in the southwest.

history

The districts of Aggou and Jidakamat already existed as small hamlets before the city was founded in the 1940s. The place name Balleyara means "small market of Bella ". It goes back to the fact that Jidakamat members of the Bella, black slaves, decided to set up their own market after they were regularly robbed and tortured in existing markets in the region, such as Tabla. The establishment of the market involved elaborate rituals. Sand was brought in from the major trading centers of Kano , Maiduguri and Sokoto and buried at the site of the new market. Highly frequented by Bella from the start, the market developed rapidly and soon resembled that in the large cities of West Africa. Its location was changed several times until the 21st century.

In 1971 an administrative post ( poste administratif ) was set up in Balleyara, a lower administrative unit headed by a chef de poste administratif . A few years later, Balleyara replaced the village of Tabla as the capital of Tagazar. The administrative post of Balleyara was removed from the Filingué department in 2011 and raised to the Balleyara department.

population

At the 2012 census, Balleyara had 16,063 residents who lived in 2,375 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 10,868 in 1,261 households, and at the 1988 census, the population was 6,042 in 1,058 households.

Economy and Infrastructure

The market day in Balleyara is Sunday. The cattle market is one of the most important within the West African Economic and Monetary Union . Mali cattle traders have contributed greatly to its development. The cattle come mainly from the western Nigerien towns of Ouallam , Mangaïzé , Banibangou , Filingué , Mokko , Hamdallaye and Abala . It is often intended for export to Nigeria , Benin , Togo and the Ivory Coast , among others . Other goods traded on the market include spices, rice, noodles, vegetables, cowpeas and millet . The market led to the emergence of a red light district , which in the Zarma language is called fada danfana (“area of the salamander ”).

Balleyara is an important center for growing vegetables. A health center is available with a Center de Santé Intégré (CSI). The anti-slavery organization Timidria has an office in the city. In 2011, under the direction of the sculptor Issoufou Lankondé, Niger's first art school was opened in Balleyara .

National road 25 runs through the city . The section to Niamey was paved in 1983 by a French company. A rehabilitation of the section to Filingué with funds from the European Union was completed in 2019.
