history

In the course of the military occupation of the later Niger colony, the French set up a military post in Filingué in 1901. Filingué was the main town in the Haut-Dallol Bosso district during the colonial period . Until 1972, only the major cities of Niamey , Maradi , Tahoua and Zinder had the status of an independent municipality in Niger . This year, Filingué was raised to a municipality at the same time as six other Nigerien towns.

population

At the 1977 census, Filingué had 6311 inhabitants, at the 1988 census 9188 inhabitants and at the 2001 census 11,065 inhabitants. For 2010, after an expansion of the urban area, 69,342 inhabitants were calculated.

The city is located in a zone where agropastoralism is practiced. The large Filingué market is mainly used by cattle herders and millet farmers, members of the Fulbe and Tuareg ethnic groups . Important commodities are cowpeas and grain. The city's residents struggle with poor nutrition, inadequate access to drinking water and problems with draining water during rainy seasons. Filingué is the seat of a Tribunal d'Instance, one of the 30 civil courts nationwide , which are below the ten civil courts of the first instance (Tribunal de Grande Instance). The city is on National Road 25 , which runs from the capital Niamey to Tébaram in the Tahoua department .

Twin town

Since 1997, Athis-Mons has been Filingué's twin town in France .
