history

Kirtachi ("Kirotaschi") in Stieler's Hand Atlas (1891)

Kirtachi was founded by a Zarma named Afoda in the early 19th century . The name Kirtachi is a combination of the words kiro , which means "bird", and tachi , which can be translated as "sandbar" or "sand dune". In 1895 in Kirtachi Ernst von Carnap-Quernheimb , who was to expand the sphere of influence of the German Empire in the race for Africa from the south , met Georges-Joseph Toutée , who was traveling on behalf of France . The German advance in this region of Africa was thus stopped. In 1903, France set up a military base in Kirtachi that had previously been in the unsafe border town of Gaya . Kirtachi provided the French with a convenient location to monitor the caravan trade from Say . In the first half of the 20th century there was a dispute between two brothers in the village of Kirtachi Zéno, whereupon the younger left the place and founded the village of Kirtachi Seybou. The rural community of Kirtachi emerged from the Kirtachi Canton in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform.

population

At the 2001 census, Kirtachi had 24,314 residents. For 2010, 33,955 inhabitants were calculated.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in a zone where rain-fed agriculture is practiced.
