Ernst von Carnap-Quernheimb
Ernst Karl Georg Hans Leonhard von Carnap-Quernheimb (born September 10, 1863 in Opole (now Opole), † December 1, 1945 in Hirschberg in the Giant Mountains (now Jelenia Góra)) was a German explorer of Africa .
Life
Ernst von Carnap-Quernheimb was born as the son of the German officer Georg von Carnap-Quernheimb in Upper Silesia . He attended cadet schools of Oranienstein and Lichterfelde . In 1882 he joined the East Prussian Field Artillery Regiment No. 1 and in 1885 the German-East African Society .
In 1885 and 1888, von Carnap-Quernheimb toured the coast of East Africa . This also included the Sultanate of Witu and the Somali coast , which at that time was the goal of German colonial efforts. Under the direction of Gustav Hörnecke , on behalf of the German-East African Society , he helped to conclude appropriate "contracts" with local rulers, which ultimately failed. On Lamu , however, he bought his own land and planted it. In 1894 and 1895 he and the doctor Richard Doering took part in the Togo hinterland expedition led by Hans Gruner . The only European on the expedition sailed from Carnap-Quernheimb down the Niger to the mouth and returned to Lome via Lagos . Among his African companions were numerous sick people who he safely brought back to Togo . In the north of Togo, von Carnap-Quernheimb founded the Sansane-Mangu station . In 1896 he took over the management of the Yaoundé station in Cameroon . From there he undertook an extensive expedition in the years 1897 and 1898 to the southeast of the colony as far as the Ngoko . With this began the development of the later districts of Dume and Molunde . During this expedition he was one of the first Europeans to reach the Jah . Under the leadership of Oltwig von Kamptz and Curt von Pavel , he was a member of other, partly military, expeditions in the hinterland of Cameroon. Among other things, there were violent clashes with the Maka people who rose up against German colonial rule.
From 1898 to 1900 von Carnap-Quernheimb served as the protection force for Cameroon à la suite .
